2026 MLB Draft Player Profile: Jackson Flora (SP)
As two of the top college pitchers face some early season challenges, Flukey with his arm fatigue and Peterson with a less dominant than expected start, the third big name in college pitching has currently put himself above the rest. At the time of this profile, Flora leads the UC Santa Barbara pitching staff with 24 innings, 28 strikeouts, and has a 1.50 ERA. Flora makes up 19% of the team innings so far and also 19% of team strikeouts.
While some naysayers will credit Flora’s success to the quality of his competition, he has faced one of the toughest lineups in college baseball. In his season debut against 20th Ranked Southern Mississippi, he threw 6 scoreless innings with 5 strikeouts and no walks.
Flora’s arsenal is one of the most unique and dominant seen in a projected first rounder in recent memory. Jackson’s fastball averages 97 mph and consistently is in the low 100s early in appearances. This fastball is Flora’s best pitch, getting a 70 Grade from MLB Draft evaluators. His secondary pitches include two very different sliders. Slider #1 is a high 70s pitch with a lot of horizontal movement, visually appearing more like a very flat sweeper. Slider #2 is a high 80s, more traditional slider, with a fair amount of both horizontal and vertical movement across the plate. Flora rounds out his arsenal with a high 80s changeup, which is clearly his least developed pitch but has shown improvements from 2025 to 2026.
Draft enthusiasts struggle to avoid comparing Flora to his former UCSB teammate and potential fellow first rounder Tyler Bremner. Bremener’s pitch mix was less dominant than Flora’s, but he featured slightly better control over that arsenal. Overall, Flora presents a much more exciting set of tools than his counterpart.
Flora’s control is by no means below average. His fastball control is his best, while he does have some room to improve in terms of his sliders and changeup. A focus on his overall control will provide the biggest draft stock rise this spring, as his arsenal already possesses 3 plus and above pitches.
Like most other college starters, Flora began his college career in the UC Santa Barbara bullpen his freshman year. During that 2024 season, Flora posted a 3.83 ERA over 47 innings pitched in relief. His characteristically low BB/9 and HR/9 were apparent, as he recorded respectable numbers in each category as a freshman reliever. After his freshman year, Flora spent his summer in the West Coast Summer League where he dominated with a .69 ERA over 13 innings. He took a large leap in productivity in his sophomore year. Sitting behind Bremner in the starting rotation, Flora had a 3.60 ERA with 86 strikeouts in 75 innings. He recorded a low BB/9 and HR/9 which is a trend he has continued with so far in 2026.
So which team will have Flora in their rotation come 2028? Flora’s start to 2026 has earned him some Top-5 consideration from some draft evaluators, whereas the 2026 MLB Draft Rankings from pre-college season have him at #14. After the top three guys are off the board (Cholowsky, Emerson, Lebron,) taking Flora over the best available player can be pretty well justified. Any team lacking pitcher talent in their farm could easily take the UC Santa Barbara starter. Specifically, teams looking for a 2028 playoff push would be more in on Flora, this could mean the Nationals at #12, the Orioles at #7, or even the Pirates at #5. While it is still early for the 2026 college season, Flora has done everything he has needed to do to raise his draft stock as high as possible.
TBG’s Prediction:
Fastball: 70
Slider (1 / 2): 60 / 60
Changeup: 50
Control: 60
Later this season, UC Santa Barbara will take on current #1 team in the country UCLA and headliner Roch Cholowsky. Although it’s a mid-week matchups, the UCSB coaching staff could create one of the most watched college games of the year by starting Jackson Flora.
